What is National Physical Therapy Month?
National Physical Therapy Month, observed every October, is an event designed to raise awareness about the value of physical therapy in improving quality of life. Physical therapists are movement experts who help people recover from injury, manage chronic conditions, and prevent future problems. Whether it’s helping athletes get back in the game or supporting seniors to stay independent, PTs empower individuals to move better and live healthier.
This month-long celebration also recognizes the dedication of physical therapists and PTAs to their patients and communities. Physical therapists work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, nursing homes, schools, and private practices. Their expertise improves physical well-being and contributes to mental and emotional health through active engagement and personalized care.
2024 Theme: Falls Prevention
This year’s theme, Falls Prevention, addresses a growing concern for aging adults and individuals with mobility challenges. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in adults over 65, and they can lead to severe injuries such as hip fractures or head trauma. However, falls aren’t just a concern for older adults—athletes and individuals recovering from surgery or injury are also at risk.
The good news? Falls are preventable! Physical therapists are trained to assess a person’s risk of falling and develop personalized treatment plans to reduce that risk. Key components of falls prevention include:
Strengthening exercises: Building muscle strength, particularly in the legs, can improve balance and coordination.
Balance training: Specific exercises like single-leg stands or tai chi can enhance stability and prevent falls.
Mobility assessments: PTs can evaluate how you walk, identify potential hazards, and recommend adjustments in footwear, walking aids, or home modifications.
Education: Teaching individuals how to safely get up from a fall or how to modify their environment for safer movement.
By focusing on falls prevention, physical therapists help individuals maintain their independence and confidence in moving around, which can significantly improve their quality of life.
How You Can Participate
During National Physical Therapy Month, consider reaching out to a physical therapist for a falls risk assessment, especially if you or a loved one is at higher risk. Many clinics offer free screenings or educational workshops to help raise awareness about the importance of falls prevention and overall physical health.
You can also support the mission by sharing information about falls prevention with your community and encouraging others to take proactive steps towards safer, healthier living.
National Physical Therapy Month is a time to celebrate the life-changing work of physical therapists and bring attention to important health issues. This year’s focus on Falls Prevention is an opportunity to highlight the ways physical therapy can keep you on your feet and thriving. Spread the word, engage with your local PT community, and take steps toward a safer future!
