Sports bra. Those two words can cause misery because the wrong one can wreak havoc on your happiness.
There are some essential things to consider when picking a sports bra that will let you feel empowered and successful.
First, you want to look at the fabric type and pay attention to the feel of the fabric. You don't want something that is scratchy and will keep gnawing at you all day. Also, watch out for tags! Second, you need to consider what activity you will be doing while wearing it because sports bras come in different compressions. Light compression is for hanging out at home or doing some yoga, while medium to heavy compression will be for more vigorous activities like running.
From a physical therapist's perspective, there are two other important things to consider: 1) What kind of straps does it have? Criss-cross or adjustable? and 2) How do you get it on? Front clasp closure or the pull-on type? For the straps, you need to consider if you have neck pain and tightness in your neck or upper traps since the criss-cross straps can dig in and make these muscles hurt more and possibly cause headaches. How you put on the sports bra is essential for people with shoulder pain because it would be more painful to have to wiggle into a sports bra and pull it on over your body. Anyone with shoulder pain would do better with a front clasp closure.
